Glowing, butterfly-like spirits created by Grohnea from the souls of those she judges to richly deserve it, removing them from the cycle of death and rebirth. They are not part of the gods’ cycle of souls, but made by someone with that specific power.
A soul egg set upon an unconscious or dead creature claims its soul, which becomes a larva. When a larva is placed in someone’s mouth, it crawls in and back out, carrying away an affliction that the bearer can conceptualize as the difference between who they are and who they were, leaving a butterfly marked by what it took.
Chronicle
- 17e02
Grohnea revealed her soul larvae: glowing butterflies coaxed from cocoons delivered by her psychopomp owl Cattywumpus, made from people who richly deserve it. Placed in a person’s mouth, a larva crawls in and out again, carrying away an affliction as conceptualized by the bearer; two of them drew out Bec’s thorns and Callie’s glitter. She gave the agents soul eggs to harvest more from the cult at the Storm Stables.
- 17e06
Callie placed soul larvae in the mouths of the giants the agents had defeated.
- 17e08
The giants whose souls had been harvested lay shriveled and desiccated, like mummies; Ulgrim felt their souls had departed, by magic that was neither necromancy nor natural evil.
- 17e09
Grohnea bound each memory-flower of Sissae’s bloom curse into a soul larva butterfly, storing them in crystal containers.
