Cloaked in leaves, feathers and bone, she polymorphed Ozborn into a giant narwhal, crying that this was the moment she had waited for and she could not let the agents interfere. Unmasked by Freki and savaged by Eixam’s swarm, she was healed by Phoebe and shielded by the thornbush, then cast a giant growth spell on a faerie dragon and the shrikes, and swung onto the dragon’s back, where Ozborn’s attack left her dying.

Afraid of the Vortex, she said that telling everything would doom them all, but admitted that she had been controlled for the past month by a monster grown within her from the Book’s corruption, which she wanted destroyed; she had taken the Book from Dominic Tremere’s vault months earlier. When Peregrine Shackleton emerged from Phoebe’s blood, she cried, “Don’t hurt him! He’s my friend!”

Tried to protect the gnome, counterspelling Sartus and claiming everything was her fault. Confused by Bec’s spell, she plane shifted the gnome away but could not escape herself; Phoebe struck her with lightning, and Ozborn killed her. Her skin sloughed off, revealing a doppelganger.

Through Callie’s speak with dead, her corpse revealed that her mission was to protect the world from another Vanishing by watching the nations and intervening in their affairs; that she came from Alye’adu; that she had been “stabbed by an artifact”; and that she had been their leader.

Bec and Callie laid out her body for the villagers of Alye’adu, who were shocked; changelings are dead forever once dead. The agents explained what had happened, learning that Isis had led the village until she was deposed for speaking against the white crane.

Sissae Moondrop, her anchor, told Cal that Isis had been an amazing druid, changed by the white crane tattoo into making bad choices and rambling about a vortex, and had tried to warn the village before she died.
